I originally posted this back in May, but I switched over blogs, and thought this would be a great one to re-post! Enjoy!
The number one question that I get when I book a family session is this:
What should we wear?!
I'm sure you've seen a lot of family photos where eveyone is wearing white shirts with jeans... or matching blue polos and khakis. So much for individuality! I hope I don't offend anyone who wants to have white top/jeans photo sessions when I say that trend has come and gone. It's outdated.
So now what's the trend? Look good together while looking like you aren't trying too hard. You want to look like you just HAPPEN to coordinate, because you are just that cool, but you don't want to look like you went shopping specifically to find family photo outfits. The idea here is to pick a color palette or a color family, and wear something that shows your individual style. A good way to find your color palette is to pick out one patterned piece that has two or more colors in it, then build the other outfits from that one. Don't be afraid of patterns, but try to avoid having several busy patterns going on all in one picture. One busier pattern, along with solids and more subtle patterns is just fine. Remember, you don't want to look like you're trying to match - you want it to look organic, natural, like you all just coincidentally create a cohesive picture.
Texture and layering is AWESOME. Texture photographs so beautifullly, and layering always makes you look more trendy and put-together.
Add your own character with scarves, hats, jackets. In the summer it may be harder to build layers, so that's okay... but in the fall and winter, it can look great!
Avoid words on your clothing and large logos. Most likely, your body position will make it so that you can't tell what words say on your clothing, but you can tell there are words there, and that will just be distracting.
I've put together a few idea boards for choosing family portrait outfits. What are your favorite color palettes? Share with me and I'll create a new board with your favorite look!
